Health Presentation

On Wednesday October18, 2006 the library was pleased to present Fit to a T @ your library. Fit to a T is a public education program developed by members of the U.S. Bone and Joint Decade (USBJD) in response to the Surgeon General’s first-ever report on bone health and osteoporosis.

In partnership with the Public Library Association and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, this education program is called 'Fit to a T' because the T-score is the measure of a person's bone density and susceptibility to fragility fracture.

Neera Kukreja, Library Director introduced the Fit to a T session, which was held in the Stroger Hospital cafeteria from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in Meeting Room 3.

The session was presented by Dr. Ambika Babu, M.D. Attending Physician, Division of Endocrinology at The John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Rush University Medical Center.

Darlene G. Ward, Reference/Research Librarian discussed consumer health information from MedlinePlus, a free comprehensive authoritative, up-to-date health information website from the world'€™s largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine. MedlinePlus online service helps visitors find answers to their health questions. Clifton Davis assisted with the computer setup. The following are pictures from this very informative event.

Donation

The Auxiliary Department of the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County has graciously donated two 32” flat screen TV sets and two DVD/VCR players for the use of all library patrons. Our patrons have enjoyed viewing CME DVDs and other educational materials on the larger screens. This new setup is ideal for group viewing and discussions. Do think of the library if your future needs require this kind of setting.

Expanded Library Privileges-Residents-Attendings

Located in the Illinois Medical District, the Academic Center / Library is very fortunate to have access to both the UIC Library of the Health Sciences and the Rush University Medical Center Library. We have links to both of these libraries on our homepage for your convenience.

Residents and Attendings may check out material from these libraries by first obtaining a red &white faculty sticker from our library. Additionally, you may avail yourself of the Rush proxy. The Academic Center / Library has information pertaining to this, but you must go to Rush University Medical Center to initiate the process. With this proxy through Rush, a resident or attending can access all of the electronic content (databases and journals) at home. This is a great benefit.

OCLC FirstSearch is an online service that gives library users access to a rich collection of reference databases. Underlying OCLC FirstSearch is the WorldCat database, the most comprehensive and up-to-date bibliographic resource available. Users will find relevant records quickly and the location of resources—in our collection or at other libraries—with the click of a button. Material not owned at the Academic Center / Library can be ordered via Interlibrary Loan for users.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

Physician's Weekly is offering Continuing Medical Education.

Physician's Weekly recently joined M/C Communications, an organization that sponsors and produces CME for physicians and allied health professionals through its Pri-Med live, online, and print activities. Please check the Physician's Weekly poster located at the entrance to the library.

Approximately once per month, the materials sent for posting will be CME activities sponsored by the Pri-Med Institute and certified for category 1 AMA credit. There is no charge for this CME credit.

The Academic Center-Library will have all free materials available at the entrance to the library.

Any library worth its salt has to have great computing resources and the Academic Center / Library is no exception! We strive to keep our computers as up to date and as useful as possible for the Stroger Hospital community. PowerPoint, Excel, MS Word, Cerner applications, and the Internet are available. You must have a sign-on to access these applications.

A word of warning: files saved on the public computers will be deleted after each logoff and/or restart. Make sure to save your files to a flash drive, or send the file to yourself via email to avoid data loss. Once the file has been deleted from the desktop, it is gone for good. Library staff cannot retrieve the file once it is lost.

If you are working on a public computer in the library and need assistance or notice that the computer is not working right, please let the staff at the Circulation Desk know. Thank you
