Medical Podcasts

So, What Is a Podcast?

A podcast is a simple yet sophisticated transfer of audio content over the Internet. It allows audio files to be shared among people around the world with a minimum of manual work.

Podcasts are usually MP3 audio files that are available for downloading onto your computer and transferred to an iPod or any portable digital-media device that can play MP3 files. Note that MP3 files can also be played right on your Windows, Linux, or Macintosh computer. MP3 is rapidly becoming the de facto standard for audio content.

How To Get Started with Podcasts:

You must first install an aggregator or pod receiving software that allows you to subscribe to a podcast feed and download files. Most aggregators are free. Here are two popular aggregators:

Use your aggregator to subscribe to the feed and download the podcasts to your MP3 player, such as an iPod, or your computer. In some cases you will need to copy and paste the podcast URL into your aggregator. Several times a day, the aggregator will then check the podcast web site for new files and download them to your device.

OK, I Get It. Now, How Do I "Get" It?

If you have a computer that's connected to the Internet, you're ready to start. The most common way of receiving a podcast is through a podcast receiver, which is a piece of software that's similar to a Web browser. Several popular podcast receivers are available, almost all of them are free. Juice Receiver (formerly Ipodder) is a popular one that can be downloaded from the following site:

It's very easy to download and install. Just follow the instructions on the download page.

Another one you can use is iTunes. With the release of version 4.9, you can subscribe to podcasts directly in iTunes.

Going Mobile

The best thing about podcasts is that they're not only ready to play when you're ready to listen but they can also go anywhere you go via iPods or other portable MP3 devices.

Below are some noteworthy sites that offer Medical Podcasts for health professionals:

  • Access Medicine: Produced by McGraw-Hill, this podcast features weekly lectures from world-renowned academic physicians on topics in internal medicine. The podcast also includes Harrison's Updates, which highlights advances in medicine, and Hurst's the Heart Updates, which examines the latest news in cardiology.

  • MedicineNet: Produces Doctors On Health, which explores current health news and trends in medicine for physicians. The podcast features several segments, including one on Research in Perspective, which discusses the latest medical research and its significance.

  • New England Journal of Medicine: Podcast of Perspective Interviews from the journal.
    http://content.nejm.org/misc/podcast.shtml
  • SCCM Syndication iCritical Care: Features two podcasts--one for breaking news and one for in depth discussions of issues faced by critical care professionals. Recent podcast topics covered critical care pharmacists, the critical care of cancer patients and studies of critical care in space.
    http://www.sccm.org/publications/syndication/index.asp
  • SoundPractice.Net: Produced by the Journal of Medical Practice Management, podcast focuses on the business and practice of medicine. RSS feeds include coverage of Financial Management, General Practice Management, Healthcare Policy, Law and Medicine, and Technology.

RSS Feed - Similar to Podcast

Similar to podcasting, RSS (Real Simple Syndication) uses XML file formats to allow Internet users to subscribe to websites with rapidly changing content, such as new sites or blogs, and regularly download text files to a computer or personal digital assistant.

PubMed RSS

PubMed RSS

PubMed offers RSS 2.0 (Really Simple Syndication) feeds.

You can set up multiple PubMed searches for RSS feeds. PubMed RSS feeds will include citations retrieved by your PubMed searches since the last time you were connected to your RSS reader.

See Education-Workshops and More for classes in January 2006.

Other Changes in PubMed

From the National Library of Medicine/National Institute of Health

Printer Friendly Format Option Added to PubMedŽ

[ This feature was implemented in PubMed on November 29, 2005.]

PubMed will soon include a new way to print search results. Use the Printer option under the Send to menu on the search results screen (see Figure 1). Choose the items you want to print and the display format before using the Send to Printer option. If you do not make any selections, the "print page" that is created will include the items in the display format currently shown on the search results screen.

Pubmed:

The Send to/Printer option creates a print page (see Figure 2). Click "Print this page." Use the Print Dialog box of your operating system to choose your printer and print. Click "Close this window" to return to your search results after printing.

Note: If your Web browser is set to block pop-ups, you may need to allow pop-ups from NCBI or other NLM Web pages to display the PubMed print page.

Interlibrary Loan Ordering through PubMed.

http://docline.gov/loansome/login.cfm

Loansome Doc

Loansome Doc is the document ordering system used for PubMedŽ and the NLM Gateway. Loansome Doc users can order biomedical literature from the Academic Center-Library through PubMed.

Users contact the library, agree to services with a signed contract, register with Loansome Doc and then order articles from PubMed (using the Send to Order feature). The latest version of Loansome Doc provides an updated appearance, new functionality, and an easier to use interface.

Information Rx

The National Library of Medicine and the American College of Physicians joined forces and launched a national program called InformationRx.

It's purpose is to give physicians support tools for directing their patients to MedlinePlus (consumer health information). They ran pilot studies in three states to determine what was most useful. From that, they determined what products would be of help.

If you go to www.informationrx.org you will find information on ordering posters to put in waiting and exam rooms, prescription pads to write down a diagnosis or drug for a patient, small business cards that some physicians preferred over the prescription pad and some bookmarks describing to the patient what is contained in MedlinePlus.

We invite all Stroger Hospital physicians to participate. They do not need to be internists. There is no charge for the materials. Each person should register individually and the Academic Center-Library will also order materials to keep on hand.

TOXNET and DIRLINE now available in PDA Format

Search interface for TOXNET (Databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health, and toxic releases) and DIRLINE (Directory of Health Organizations) are now available for personal digital assistants. These versions are designed for handheld devices with Internet connectivity. Limited graphics and simple screen layout are used for display on small screens.

New in the Academic Center-Library - Physician's Weekly

We now have Physician's Weekly posters delivered weekly to the library. There is a wall mount display at the entrance to the library for viewing.

Physician's Weekly includes a lead story, What's in the News, Practice Management, Clinical Updates, Medical Horizons, Reading Room, and much more.

Stop by the Academic Center-Library to keep up-to-date.

Database News

A message from UpToDate: UpToDate Table of Contents Changes

The Table of Contents will still appear, but some of the topic reviews within the Table of Contents will no longer be live links. This change will not affect the usability of UpToDate, as all of the content is still easily accessible via the main search box.

The following are a few search tips that will help you view topic reviews previously accessible through the Table of Contents.

Patient Information:

To view the patient information handouts type in the words "patient info" and you will see all of the patient information topics available. To narrow your search, use the "narrow search results" button and type in the disease or condition. All patient information is also freely available to patients at www.patients.uptodate.com

Drug Information:

To view information on a medication, type in the name of the medication, either brand name or generic in the main search box. For each medication you will see a number of drug information topics including adult information, pediatric information, and patient level information. UpToDate also offers international, as well as natural drug information.

Nursing Resources - Ovid CINAHL has Clinical Queries Filter

Are you familiar with the Clinical Queries database in PubMed? Are you searching for evidence in the literature to base your clinical decisions? Now, you can do the same type of searching for evidence in the CINAHL database.

You will be able to set limits in as many as nine categories to include: therapy, diagnosis, prognosis, reviews, clinical prediction guides, qualitative studies, etiology costs, and economics.

You can do this by selecting the "More Limits" icon on the Main Search page. Then, from the Clinical Queries list, choose one of the nine filter categories. Your results then can be further refined by selecting one of the three limiting options: sensitivity (the greatest percentage of relevant citations within the database), specificity (the greatest percentage of relevant articles within the search results), and optimization (combining both options).

If you would like assistance in searching CINAHL with these limits or would like help in searching the other Ovid biomedical databases to which we subscribe, please feel free to contact the Reference/Research Librarian (312-864-0505) to set up a free research consultation.
