CCH Academic Center Library Newsletter
April, 2005
National Library Week
National Library Week will be observed April 10-16, 2005. The theme for 2005
is "Something for Everyone @ your library."
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.
The Allied Professional Association of the American Library Association (ALA-APA) annually sponsors National Library Workers Day, which falls on the Tuesday (April 12) of National Library Week. The purpose is to recognize all library workers, including librarians, support staff and others who make library service possible every day.
The Academic Center / Library will sponsor events to highlight library programs and services including:
Library Information Fair at The Academic Center / Library on Tuesday April 12, at 12:00 p.m. This one-day information fair will feature several instruction sessions (PubMed, OVID) covering topics of interest to clinicians, researchers, and educators in the health sciences. The event is free and open to all members of the Stroger Hospital community.
Vendor Book Sale -A representative from Elsevier will be in the Stroger Hospital cafeteria on April 13, 2005 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Elsevier is a world leading, multiple-media publisher of scientific, technical and health information products and services.
Brown Bag Luncheon-To be announced.
Library Exhibit- The Academic Center / Library will be in the Stroger Hospital cafeteria from 11:30-2:30 p.m. on Wednesday April 13, 2005 to give the Stroger Hospital community the opportunity to learn about the latest services in the library.
New Technology
New Enhancements to OvidWeb: Saving Searches and Auto Alerts
Unlike previously, now you can save your searches within the Ovid databases, or you can set up
Auto Alerts, also known as SDI’s (selective dissemination of information), or current
awareness services. Through Ovid’s Auto Alerts, you can customize the delivery of
information. You can set up Ovid to send you updated results, when the database is updated.
Plus, you can have this information sent to other colleagues in addition to yourself. For
assistance in harnessing these capabilities in Ovid, please see a librarian in the
Academic Center / Library.
New Feature in PubMed: Action Bar Changed
When searching in PubMed, users will no longer have to click twice to display and send citations. Instead, these options now will be in pull-down menus and will occur as soon as they are selected from the menu. It is the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) hope that this new feature will ameliorate the confusion that some users have experienced in the past. NLM welcomes suggestions for improving the PubMed interface. As always, if you identify specific elements that you feel need to be altered or refined, please let the Academic Center / Library know; we then will do our best to channel it to the appropriate people at the NLM.
UpToDate Pediatrics is now available on the http://cchintranet Web site.
- Access the most current information on any aspect of pediatrics;
- Recognize the clinical manifestations of a wide variety of diseases and disorders and describe current options for diagnosis, management and therapy, including the efficacy, doses, and interactions of individual drugs in all of pediatrics;
- Evaluate and treat system-specific manifestations of systemic disorders;
- Educate patients regarding screening and prevention.

Ovid provides an explanation of Clinical Evidence by stating the following: "[Clinical Evidence] provides a concise account of the current state of knowledge, ignorance, and uncertainty about the prevention and treatment of a wide range of clinical conditions based on thorough searches and appraisal of the literature. In other words, it contains...evidence on the effects of common clinical interventions."
In summary, Clinical Evidence is much like the Up-to-Date database in content and in scope. It might be a good idea, when looking for assistance in clinical decision-making, to perform searches in both databases and then to compare results. Clinical Evidence, in addition to Books at Ovid and Up-to-Date, is available only on the Stroger Hospital campus.

Fit for Fall: New Online Program Promotes Physical Activity in English or Spanish
A new program from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI),
entitled
"Physical Activity: Your Heart Your Life A Lay Health Educator's Program" has
just gone live on the NHLBI Web site. For lay health educators a virtual
trainer of trainers, named Dona Fela, will help educators learn how to
personally and confidently approach members of the Latino community with
the same information contained in the online program for the public.
The English program is at http://hin.nhlbi.nih.gov/salud/pa/teaching.htm.
The online program includes a number of free downloadable teaching aids, such as
handouts, picture cards, session outlines, and more to help educators prepare and
conduct a session on the importance of physical activity to heart health. A Spanish language version of this program
is also available at http://hin.nhlbi.nih.gov/salud/pa/indexsp.htm.

Importance of Logging Off Correctly in Ovid
This is just a reminder to everyone to logoff correctly when exiting any
of the Ovid databases. It is not sufficient to click on the "x" to close
the browser. Rather, you must click on the Logoff link which can be found
on virtually every Webpage in Ovid. The reason for this is that the Academic
Center / Library has a limited number of seats for our license. This means
that there are a maximum number of concurrent users. When merely closing
the browser, Ovid takes some time to register that you no longer wish to be
connected.
By clicking on the Logoff link, however, you are terminating your session immediately, and you are freeing up a seat.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping to make the Ovid databases and resources available to all of our patrons.
Full-text Electronic Journals
The Academic Center/ Library's full-text collection consists of three subsets of online journals.
One subset of online journals requires the patron to be onsite to view the
full-text of the articles. These journals are authenticated by IP, also known as
Internet Protocol. Patrons can access these journals by going to our
Webpage's alphabetical journal list and clicking on the link to the journal.
The second subset of online journals is also authenticated by IP
(onsite usage only), and these journals have full-text access through the
company called Ovid. To access these, please go to the OvidWeb link on the
library's homepage or go directly to OvidWeb using the following URL:
http://gateway.ovid.com/autologin.html.
The third subset of full-text journals is accessed using usernames and passwords.
The usernames and passwords can be found on the Stroger Hospital Intranet under the Academic Center/
Library's Online Journal link at the top of the column on the left. The journals authenticated
by username and password can be found by going to the alphabetical journal list on the library's homepage.
Please take a look at our entire electronic collection through these three pathways.

Welcome New House Staff
The Academic Center/ Library staff
members wish to extend a warm welcome to this year's
incoming residents. As part of their orientation, residents
visit the library for a tour and a demonstration of our
electronic resources. For those residents unable to attend
this introduction, they can set up individual or small
group sessions at a mutually convenient time with a librarian.
In addition, we would like to remind you that we are
dedicated to facilitating your learning and your research.
If you desire training or assistance beyond the introduction,
you can set up a free consultation with a librarian.
These consultations can be tailored to suit your educational
needs. Stop by the library today to meet the staff and
to receive a library card!
Library Technology
The Academic Center / Library is very pleased to announce
and to unveil our new Website. Located at the same address
as the previous site (www.cchaclib.org), the new pages
are more streamlined and offer a more direct way to
access our online full-text Ovid collection of electronic
journals. Formatted in an alphabetical list, the new
journal listing indicates the years and volumes of coverage
for print journals in addition to a link to the table
of contents for the Ovid electronic journals. For example,
we carry the journal Academic Medicine in print from
volume 70 (1995) to the present and online via Ovid
from 2000 to the present.
Our new Webpage has a direct link to searching the Ovid databases, too. By clicking
on the link OvidWeb under databases on our Webpage and
then clicking on the green oval button that says, "continue"
at the top left, the user will see the list of databases
to which we subscribe. We have also changed the order
of the databases recently to reflect and to address
the needs of our searchers.
To learn more about the scope of each of the databases, simply click on the red "i" in
the yellow circle to the left of each database link. For example, by clicking
on the information link for Old Medline, one would discover that Old Medline
covers articles in the fields of medicine, preclinical sciences, and allied health
sciences originally printed in hardcopy indexes published from 1951-1965.
MKSAP's -- What's New?
In case you were not aware, the Academic Center/ Library continues to purchase
the MKSAP's (Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program) for Stroger
Hospital residents to use while in the library. The MKSAP's are kept
at the circulation desk, and a patron will need to give his/her hospital
ID to a circulation staff member in order to borrow them. The latest set
includes the following specialties:
- Gastroenterology and Hepatology
- Rheumatology
- Endocrinology and Metabolism
- Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care
- Neurology
With these MKSAP's, photocopying any part of it is prohibited; it is
a copyright infringement.
In addition to purchasing the print sets, the library has also acquired MKSAP's
in audiotape format. We are aware that people learn in different ways and wanted
to meet that need. These audiotapes, as with all audiotapes in our library,
can be checked out with a current library card for three days.
Circulation
Also recently acquired by the Academic Center / Library are tapes 1-41 of Family
Practice Review: Best Practices for the 21st Century. They are copyright 2003 and are located in the display case on the side of the library towards the back. As with all videotapes in our library, the loan period is three days.

Electronic Books
In order to access the e-book collection, you will need to go to the same
Web address as above, but you will click on the link for the “Books @
Ovid” databases. The books contain the same content as the print version.
Electronic Databases
In order to access the medical databases, you will need to go to the same
Web address as the e-journals and the e-books. You will see the following categories
of databases: Medline with its date breakdowns, CINAHL,
the evidence-based medicine databases, Clinical Evidence,
and HaPI (the Health and Psychosocial
Instruments database). Medline contains the same content as the
PubMed version but with a different interface. CINAHL stands for the Cumulative
Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. To learn more about any of these
databases, you can click on the “i”, or the scope note next to
the blue link for the databases. You can find full-text article links in all
of the aforementioned electronic databases.
As you can see, we have quite a few resources through Ovid. This document
serves as an ntroduction and to help you to become more aware of research
and clinical materials. If you would like a librarian to orient you to using
them more efficiently, please contact the Academic Center / Library. We are
happy to provide research consultations free of charge for small groups or
individuals at a mutually convenient time. We are here to assist you.

Expanded Circulation Privileges
Currently employed SSHC Faculty (Attending and Residents) can now borrow books from the University of Illinois at Chicago campus libraries and the Rush University Library. The procedure is fast and easy and requires the patron to come to our library with his/her hospital ID badge and then to fill out a form. The library staff member will then affix a red and white CCH faculty sticker onto the hospital badge.
When going to UIC or Rush to borrow books, he/she needs to present the SHCC badge with the red sticker. The patron must abide by the rules and policies set forth from UIC and Rush. The UIC Library of the Health Sciences is located at 1750 West Polk Street, and Rush’s library is at 600 South Paulina on the 5th floor.
Also at Rush, residents and attending physicians with privileges at Rush can sign up for individual usernames and passwords for access to full-text articles within the Ovid databases. Once registered with the Rush Library, he or she can be eligible for a proxy server account for remote access to the databases and full-text articles. The online form is at http://www.univ.rush.edu/library/proxy.html . You can also request a proxy server account by calling the library’s help desk at 312-942-HELP.
