THE VANGUARD

The John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital
of Cook County
Academic Center-Library

June, 2005

Welcome New House Staff

The Academic Center / Library staff members wish to extend a warm welcome to this year's incoming residents. As part of their orientation, residents visit the library for tours and demonstrations of our electronic resources. For those residents unable to attend this introduction, they can set up individual or small group sessions at a mutually convenient time with a librarian.

In addition, we would like to remind you that we are dedicated to facilitating your learning and research needs. If you desire training or assistance beyond the introduction, you can set up a free consultation with a librarian. These consultations can be tailored to suit your educational needs. Stop by the library today to meet the staff and to receive a library card!

National Library Week Celebration

The 2005 National Library Week- the American Library Association's annual celebration of America's libraries and librarians- was celebrated April 10 through April 16. This year, the Academic Center / Library offered an exciting array of special events.

Library Information Fair at The Academic Center-Library was on Tuesday, April 12, at 12:00 p.m.. This one-day information fair featured several instruction sessions (PubMed, OVID) covering topics of interest to clinicians, researchers, and educators in the health sciences. The event was free and open to all members of the Stroger Hospital community.

Library Information Fair with Ovid was held on Wednesday, April 20. A trainer from Ovid came to the library and did an excellent presentation. Many members of the Stroger Community benefited from learning about this database of journal citations to which the library has access. Free User's Guides about OVID and freebies were provided by Ovid.

The Academic Center / Library did a Library Exhibit in the Stroger Hospital cafeteria from 11:30-2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13 to give the Stroger Community the opportunity to learn about the latest services in the library. Freebies were given out by the Librarian there.

The Library ended the week-long celebration with a drawing for prizes provided by the GMR and the National Library of Medicine.

The winners are:
Di Sooraj Lashmi Naraman
Harsha Patel
Nandita Guha

The Academic Center / Library's Electronic Resources

For those new to the Academic Center / Library at the Stroger Hospital, we would like to acquaint you with our electronic resources. First of all, the Web address of our web page is http://www.cchaclib.org There is also a link to our homepage on the Stroger Hospital Intranet.

On our web page, you will find information about our library, our online catalog for books and audiovisual items, databases including PubMed, OvidWeb, Up-to-Date, our A-Z list of journals (print and electronic), our newsletter—The Vanguard, and links to three local health science libraries.

Focusing on our electronic journal collection, some of the e-journals require username/password authentication, while others are IP (site only) validated. To access username and passwords needed, you can visit the hospital's Intranet page (http://cchintranet) and click on the following link at the top of the left column: "Academic Library Selected Online Journal Passwords."

There also is a link at the top of that page to our homepage. The e-journals associated with OvidWeb, on the other hand, must be used on the Stroger campus. We currently subscribe to over 300 electronic journals through Ovid.

Speaking of Ovid, the interface to the databases through Ovid will change in the near future. The projected release date is around the middle of July. We will have more definitive information on the roll-out date soon. The main reason for the interface change is to make searching more user-friendly and efficient. The new features include: "Find Citation," "Find Citing Articles," "Purchase Print Copy" (books only), and "Find Similar." In addition to these changes, Ovid has incorporated some cosmetic changes.

We have purchased electronic content to 25 electronic books through Ovid. The titles of these books are the following:

A to Z Drug Facts
Adams and Victors' Principles of Neurology
Chapman's Orthopaedic Surgery
Clinical Evidence
Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine
Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment
Current Pediatric Diagnosis and Treatment
Danforth's Obstetrics and Gynecology
Emergency Medicine: Companion Handbook: A Comprehensive Study Guide
Emergency Medicine: A Comprehensive Study Guide
Fitzpatrick's Dermatology in General Medicine
Harrison's Manual of Medicine
Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine
Hurt's The Heart
Kaplan's Clinical Hypertension
Kelley's Textbooks of Internal Medicine
Lippincott's Nursing Drug Guide
Novak's Gynecology
Nursing Diagnosis: Application to Clinical Practice
Oski's Pediatrics: Principles and Practice
Primary Care Medicine
Principles and Practice of Endocrinology and Metabolism
Schiff's Diseases of the Liver
Washington Manual of Surgery

A user can browse one or multiple books, can browse using the index, or can search by typing a phrase or a question. The interface to the Books @ Ovid database is similar to the other databases within OvidWeb.

Two books we would like to highlight in this issue of our newsletter are the Fourth Edition of The Washington Manual of Surgery and the Seventeenth Edition of Current Pediatric Diagnosis and Treatment.

Both of these new editions have been loaded recently in Ovid. "The Washington Manual of Surgery, Fourth Edition, offers clear succinct surgical guidelines to treat adult and pediatric patients. Compiled by the residents and faculty of one of the world's top surgical training programs, this cutting-edge reference offers proven guidance to recommend appropriate diagnostic laboratory and radiographic studies, make accurate assessments with the latest algorithms and differential diagnosis tables, update your knowledge of the incidence and risk factors for diseases and disorders, and implement the most recommended medical and surgical interventions."

As for the 17th Edition of Current Pediatric Diagnosis and Treatment (also known as CPDT), it "provides timely clinical information on the ambulatory and inpatient medical care of children. Comprehensive in scope, practical by design, the book answers the full range of questions that arise in the daily practice of pediatrics. More than 800 diseases and disorders are covered in this single-source book on ambulatory and inpatient pediatrics. The 17th Edition contains new material on such topics as neoplastic disease, HIV, and infections, plus updates to references and websites."

If you would like assistance in searching Ovid Web or any of the other databases, please call or stop by the library to set up a free consultation.

New Technology

PubMed's Single Citation Matcher Enhanced: First Author Search and Autocomplete for Journal Titles Added

www.pubmed.gov

First author searching uses data from the Author field, so use the last name + initial(s) format to enter a name, then click in the "Only as first author" check box. You can alternatively search by first author directly in the search box on the PubMed screens. Enter an author name followed by the first author search tag, [1au].

An autocomplete feature has been added to the Single Citation Matcher box used for entering journal names. This feature will suggest titles as you enter a title abbreviation or full title. When you see the title you are looking for, you can stop entering and select the title. Titles displayed by the autocomplete menu are in a ranked order based on the number of citations in PubMed. You do not have to select from the autocomplete list if you prefer to paste in a title or abbreviation copied from elsewhere.

Not Just for Verification

The Single Citation Matcher is a valuable tool for finding the citation for a particular article using title words or citation information, but it can also be used, e.g., to find an entire volume or issue of a journal, or to generate a bibliography by a first author.

The Single Citation Matcher can be helpful to researchers and clinicians, as well as librarians.

Circulation Department

Expanded Circulation Privileges

Resident and attending physicians are encouraged to register at our library for a red and white faculty sticker. With this sticker, you will be able to check out material at both the Rush Library and the Library of the Health Sciences at UIC. Borrowing policies and procedures associated with each library will apply.

There's More to Our Books than Meets the Eye!

Book + Media = Mixed Media

Many books come with additional materials such as a DVD, CD-ROM, computer disks, videos, etc. To identify these materials, we placed a label inside the book that says:

"Accompanying material available separately. Please consult the Library Catalog for more information."

All accompanying media are located at the Circulation Desk.
