The John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital
of Cook County
Academic Center-Library

October 2006

October is National Medical Librarians Month

National Medical Librarians Month was created by the Medical Library Association to raise awareness of the important role of the health information professional. Patients and those in the health care community need the specialized services that medical librarians provide now more than ever before.

As part of this annual event, The Academic Center / Library will be hosting the following events to highlight library programs and services including:

Library Exhibit- The Academic Center / Library will be in the Stroger Hospital cafeteria from 11:30-2:00 p.m. on Thursday October 5, 2006 to give the Stroger Hospital community the opportunity to learn about the latest services in the library. Stop by for freebies, handouts, brochures, etc.

Health Presentation - The Academic Center /Library is pleased to present Fit to a T @ your library. Fit to a T is a public education program developed by members of the U.S. Bone and Joint Decade (USBJD) in response to the Surgeon General's first-ever report on bone health and osteoporosis.

In partnership with the Public Library Association and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine this education program is called "Fit to a T" because the T-score is the measure of a person's bone density and susceptibility to fragility fracture.

Neera Kukreja, Library Director will introduce the Fit to a T session on Wednesday October 18, 2006. The presentation will be in the Stroger Hospital cafeteria from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in Meeting Room 3.

The session will be presented by Dr. Ambika Babu, M.D. Attending Physician, Division of Endocrinology at The John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Rush University Medical Center and by Darlene G. Ward, Reference/Research Librarian who will discuss consumer health information from MedlinePlus, a free, comprehensive, authoritative, up-to-date health information web site from the world’s largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine. MedlinePlus online service helps visitors find answers to their health questions.
